The life of Zachary “Zack” Grey Willetts continues to be remembered by family, friends, fellow service members, and the East Carolina University community more than a decade after his passing. Although Zack died in February 2013, his legacy remains one of courage, friendship, and selfless service. Born and raised in Wilmington, North Carolina, Zack developed a love for the outdoors at an early age. Whether he was fishing, boating, spending time at the beach, or participating in athletics, he embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and determination. Friends often described him as someone who possessed an infectious smile, a great sense of humor, and the unique ability to make everyone around him feel welcome.
Zack attended Hoggard High School, where he graduated in 2008. During his time there, he excelled as a student-athlete, competing in football, baseball, and lacrosse. He was also a proud member of the school’s 2007 State Championship football team. Coaches and teammates admired his competitive spirit, teamwork, and willingness to encourage others both on and off the field.
Following graduation, Zack continued his education at East Carolina University while also attending Pitt Community College. His years in Greenville allowed him to build lasting friendships and prepare for the future while remaining committed to the values that defined his life—discipline, responsibility, and service.
One of Zack’s greatest accomplishments was his service in the North Carolina Army National Guard. As a Combat Engineer assigned to the 883rd Combat Engineer Company (Sappers), he accepted one of the military’s most demanding roles. His responsibilities included supporting combat operations, route clearance, construction, demolition, and helping ensure the safety and mobility of fellow soldiers in challenging environments.
Zack later deployed to Zabul Province, Afghanistan, where he proudly served alongside members of his unit. His willingness to volunteer for overseas deployment reflected both his courage and his deep commitment to serving his state and his nation. By the completion of his deployment, he had earned the rank of Specialist, gaining the respect of fellow soldiers who remembered him as a dependable teammate, loyal friend, and dedicated serviceman.
Following his passing, tributes poured in from classmates, military colleagues, coaches, neighbors, and lifelong friends. Many shared stories of his adventurous personality, generous heart, and ability to bring laughter into every situation. Those who served with him remembered the bonds formed during deployment, while childhood friends reflected on years spent enjoying North Carolina’s beaches, sporting events, and outdoor adventures.
His family celebrated a life defined not only by military service but also by compassion and generosity. In keeping with those values, memorial donations were requested for organizations supporting wounded veterans and children facing serious illnesses, causes that reflected Zack’s lifelong desire to help others.
Although many years have passed since his death, Zack Willetts’ influence continues to be felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His life stands as a lasting reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the National Guard who balance military service with education, family, and community life.
